A conversation with the Global Tapestry of Alternatives
On Tuesday, May 11, EDGE Funders co-hosted the webinar “Weaving Systemic Alternatives from the Global South” together with Global Tapestry of Alternatives. We are very grateful to all people who participated in the webinar!
During this 90 minute webinar organized by EDGE Funders Alliance and Global Tapestry of Alternatives (GTA) we learned about systemic alternatives, through examples and experiences from various GTA core team members from different parts of the world, and heard how they have been weaving together myriad networks of alternatives across the world to enable cross-cultural and cross-sectoral collaborations, mutual learning and critical engagement to collectively envision possible futures, and organize a critical mass for macro-change.

Alejandra Jiménez Ramírez (Mexico): Activist in grassroots and indigenous socio-environmental movements, feminist, and rhizomatic weaver. Born in Mexico City, but self-exiled in the mountains and indigenous worldviews. Currently collaborates in Crianza Mutua México network and in Unitierra Oaxaca. Link to her presentation here.
Arturo Escobar (Colombia): Arturo is a Colombian activist-researcher, working on territorial struggles against extractivism and on post-development regional transitions, and ontological design. He taught anthropology and political ecology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill until 2018. Read his presentation here.
Ashish Kothari (India): Founder-member of Indian environmental group Kalpavriksh. He has (co)authored or (co)edited over 30 books, including Pluriverse and Alternative Futures, and helps coordinate the Vikalp Sangam and Radical Ecological Democracy processes. Link to his presentation here.
Marta Musić (ex-Yugoslavia): A decolonial, feminist activist-researcher. Her work as a transnational movement organizer mainly consists of building bridges between struggles, movements and initiatives and creating networks of solidarity. Read her intervention here.
Vasna Ramasar (South Africa): Academic and activist from South Africa living and working in Sweden. She has always been involved in environmental justice, politics of environment and alternatives to development. Link to her presentation here.
