The Centre for Rising Powers and Global Development (CRPD) conducts and facilitates research on:
- the impact of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and other rapidly-changing and increasingly influential middle-income countries on low-income countries
- the need for the restructuring of global development institutions and global public goods, such as the environment, food, and health
- the future of Development Studies research and training
The Centre for Rising Powers and Global Development (CRPD) promotes the notion that fostering dialogue amongst countries traditionally associated with aid and “overseas development”, and emerging powers, like China, India and Brazil is a high priority. The latter have experienced recent success in reducing their own levels of poverty. Therefore a constructive way to face global challenges like climate change, food and water scarcity, and health epidemics is for both communities of states to work together. Taking the overarching research question of “How do the Rising Powers influence the policy options and the policy opportunities in the development world?”, specific research areas include:
