This collaborative action research project seeks to analyse how and under what conditions decentralised governance, farmer participation and capacity building can promote the adaptive management of agricultural biodiversity in the context of localised food systems and livelihoods.

Other objectives of the project include to:

  • Identify ways of strengthening the capacities of farmers and other actors for the adaptive management of agricultural biodiversity
  • Identify and develop indicators to analyse the dynamic links between livelihoods and agricultural biodiversity
  • Develop and apply Participatory Assessment Methodologies for comprehensive valuations of agricultural biodiversity and the various systems in which local biodiversity is embedded
  • Identify and recommend effective policies and processes that may be used to build capacities and institutionalise the adaptive management of agricultural biodiversity

The project’s strategy to achieve these objectives includes a combination of approaches including:

  • a livelihoods focus
  • a food systems focus
  • adaptive management
  • a rights based approach

Ouputs of the project include case studies from:

  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Peru
  • Iran
