The IAI is an intergovernmental organization seeking to promote collaborative research relevant to global change and to increase the understanding of global change phenomena and their socio-economic implications through:
- increasing the scientific capacity of the region
- encouraging research beyond the scope of national programs
- providing useful and timely information to policy makers
The IAI is currently conducting four research topics :
- understanding climate change and variability in the Americas
- comparative studies of ecosystem, biodiversity, land use and cover, and water resources in the Americas
- understanding global change modulations of the composition of the atmosphere, oceans and fresh waters
- understanding the human dimensions and policy implications of global change, climate variability and land use
