The Centre for Southern African Studies (CSAS) was established at the University of the Western Cape in 1990 to promote an exploration of problems faced by Southern African countries. The CSAS has an extensive network among universities, institutions and NGOs in Southern Africa and elsewhere on the African continent.

It is a constituent unit of  the School of Government, and its aims and functions are:

  • to research and disseminate findings on Southern Africa, particularly around social, economic and political issues;
  • to educate South Africans in regional relations through appropriate academic and Adult Education courses; and
  • to raise public awareness of Southern African questions through conferences, symposia and workshops.

The centre is a Citizenship DRC partner.
