The University of Ibadan was founded in 1948, as an external College of the University of London and gained autonomy in 1962. Ibadan was the first university established in Nigeria and remains one of its premier institutions of higher learning.
The university comprises of thirteen faculties across the sciences, the arts and the social sciences, ranging from medicine to agriculture, from the social sciences to technology. Departments within the faculty of social science include:
