The School promotes the study of international relations as an academic discipline in India and understanding of international affairs in an inter-disciplinary perspective.
The teaching/research at the School is carried out in seven centres, which are:

- Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS)
- Centre for International Politics, Organisation and Disarmament (CIPOD)
- Centre for Russian, Central Asian and East European Studies (CRCAEES)
- Centre for South, Central, Southeast Asian and Southwest Pacific Studies (CSCSASPS)
- Centre for West Asian & African Studies (CWAAS)
