The “Waging” network was launched in 1999 to connect women in conflict areas to one another and to policy shapers worldwide.

Women Waging Peace advocates for the full participation of women in formal and informal peace processes around the world by:

  • building a network of women peacemakers
  • making the case that women make vital contributions to conflict prevention, peace negotiations, and post-conflict reconstruction efforts
  • shaping public policy by generating support from policymakers for women’s agency in promoting security

Responding to the need for a strong academic foundation in the area pf women’s contributions in the field of security, the Women Waging Peace Policy Commission was created in 2001 to focus on research and analysis as underpinnings for policy advocacy. The Commission is producing a series of 14 case studies documenting the effectiveness of women in peace efforts in conflicts around the globe. The studies examine women’s activities in conflict prevention, pre-negotiation and negotiation, and post-conflict reconstruction.
