Organisation aiming to promote equity and development through health research.
Research is structured in six National Programmes according to high-priority areas identified by the South African Government and in keeping with international trends. Programmes and units include:
- environment and development -alcohol and drug abuse, exercise science and sports medicine research unit, , health & development, health promotion research
- health systems and policy – includes telemedicine research, biostatistics
- non-communicable diseases – including stress disorders, cancer epidemiology , crime, violence and injury, dental research
- infection and immunity – including tuberculosis research , HIV prevention and vaccine research, malaria research, South African traditional medicines research
- molecules to disease – including molecular and cellular biology, human genetics research, human genomic diversity and disease research
- women and child health – gender and health, maternal and infant care, nutrition
