The Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA) has 76 member hospice programmes present in all nine provinces, and with hospice outreach programmes reaching many more areas. Member hospices of HPCA provide palliative care to those with life-limiting, life-threatening and incurable conditions.
Palliative care is care of the body, mind and spirit of each patient, adult and child, and support to the family into the bereavement period. The aim of palliative care is to relieve suffering and promote the best possible quality of life.
