Gapresearch.org is the web site of the Globalisation and Poverty research programme at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS).
The programme aims to address four gaps:
- The benefits gap. Who are the gainers and who are the losers from greater involvement by poor countries and poor people in the global economy? What measures can be taken to spread the gains from globalisation more widely? Credible research is needed to identify the positive and negative effects of globalisation and to support policies to increase the benefits to the poor.
- The resources gap. Many of the world’s poorest people are completely marginalised from globalisation processes. How can they be incorporated into the global economy in sustainable ways?
- The policy gap. How can the global trading and financial systems and the institutions that regulate them be made to contribute more to the elimination of global poverty?
- The legitimacy gap. How can the voice of developing country governments and poor people in global institutions be made more effective? Without this voice, these institutions will lose legitimacy.
