Cocoa is highly vulnerable to climate change, specifically temperature and precipitation pattern changes, and increased occurrence of extreme climate events, in particular, drought. Smallholder farmers are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which threatens to undermine the efficiency and productivity of the Indonesian cocoa sector as a whole.

The important role which smallholder farmers can play in mitigating the impacts of climate change and in strengthening the resilience of the value chain is increasingly being recognized by public and private sector actors.
