What is FundAction?

Since October 2017-202022, FundAction was a fiscally-sponsored project at EDGE.

The aim is to distribute funding to support European activism via a participatory fund, using a pooled funding model.

The ambition is to offer three types of grants:

  • Resist: Small quick response grants for groups who are directly affected by political events
  • Rethink: Creating a pan-European activist network and community through funds for collaboration, exchange and capacity building
  • Renew: Support for new initiatives and ideas that promote systemic change

Normally philanthropic money sits in an institution where staff and board members decide where to spend it.

Participatory grantmaking seeks to involve those directly affected by the issues – the people that the money intends to help – in decision-making about where that money goes.

It can be a more effective way of reaching people and addressing issues of power.

FundAction was born out of conversations between four funders at the EDGE Funders Alliance European Retreat in 2016: Guerrilla Foundation, Charles Leopold Mayer Foundation, Open Society Foundation Initiative in Europe, and European Cultural Foundation.

These EDGE members, pooled their resources and handed over design to a group of activists in their network. FundAction was born!

FundAction continues to give out grants to grassroots activist groups from across Europe under another fiscal sponsor. For more information, see here: https://medium.com/@FundAction
