ACPD’s overall goal is to advance action by the Canadian government to meet the commitments that it made in the 1994 Cairo Programme of Action, and, in particular, to meet the financial targets set at Cairo. Through dialogue, education, advocacy and coalition building, ACPD is the only Canadian NGO that promotes the full implementation of the Programme of Action stemming from the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

ACPD mobilizes public support for international population and development issues, focusing on the inter-relationships between population growth and structure, the environment, over-consumption, poverty, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equity and equality, human rights, migration, economics, and other development issues. ACPD also works with non-governmental organisations throughout the world to promote public policy discussion on population and development issues, and plays an active role in international meetings and forums aimed at advancing the ICPD agenda.

ACPD’s key objectives are to:

  • mobilise public support to advance understanding and support of international population and development issues
  • build coalitions and constituencies
  • hold governments to account
  • ensure that the achievements made at ICPD are fully protected and promoted at the international level
