In line with the increasing emphasis on aid effectiveness, including promoting new partnerships for channeling aid, this paper reports on the extent to which gender equality is and should be part of this agenda. The report reflects country-level experiences shared at the Burundi consultation on the gender equality opportunities and challenges arising from aid reform processes, through case studies on Zambia, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana and Burundi

Some key lessons are:

  • a sector approach to gender equality can be an important step toward securing direct support for national gender equality priorities
  • linking economic planning and poverty reduction frameworks offers the potential for greater accountability and evidence-based policy advocacy
  • the use of basket funds for gender equality does provide added assurance that dedicated resources are available for a thematic priority
